Multistate Bar Exam - mBE

MBE Format

On Wednesday of the week of the bar exam, the Multistate Bar Examination, which is also called the MBE, is administered. The MBE is given in almost every state (except Louisiana). It’s also given in several federal territories.

MBE Questions

MBE Questions should be answered according to majority legal principles. There are two MBE sessions – morning and afternoon. Each consists of 100 questions. The total number of MBE questions is 200. 190 questions count toward your score.

MBE Subjects and Topics

The MBE is a 200-question, multiple-choice exam that tests six different subjects:
  • civil procedure
  • contracts (also includes sales)
  • torts
  • constitutional law
  • criminal law and procedure
  • evidence
  • real property

Scoring and Grading

Raw Score

The amount of questions you answer correctly is your raw score.

Scaled Score

Your raw score is adjusted into a scaled score. The scaling adjustment amount varies depending upon the difficulty of the exam, but can range anywhere from 5 to 30 points and may even occasionally fall outside this range.
