Bar Exam Format
The New Mexico bar exam is the Uniform Bar Exam (“UBE”), which has written questions on Tuesday and multiple choice questions on Wednesday.
Day 1
On the first day, the bar examiners administer 6, 30-minute MEE questions in the 3-hour morning session and 2, 90-minute MPTs in the 3-hour afternoon session.
Day 2
On the second day, the bar examiners administer the MBE, having 100 multiple choice questions in the 3-hour morning session and another 100 questions in the 3-hour afternoon session.
Reciprocity
The State of New Mexico has reciprocity by motion for admission or by UBE score.

The essay questions on the New Mexico bar exam may test these subjects:
- Agency;
- Article 9 of the U.C.C. – Secured Transactions;
- Conflict of Laws;
- Constitutional Law;
- Contracts (including Article 2 of the U.C.C. – Sales);
- Corporations;
- Criminal Law (including Criminal Procedure);
- Decedents’ Estates;
- Evidence Law;
- Family Law;
- Federal Civil Procedure;
- Limited Liability Companies;
- Partnerships;
- Real Property;
- Torts; and
- Trusts and Future Interests.
Bar Exam Dates
The New Mexico bar exam is held in February and July. The exam is usually on the last Wednesday and prior Tuesday of each month.
2024

Exam Results
The February New Mexico bar exam results are usually available by mid-April. The July New Mexico bar exam results are usually available by mid-September. Once the results are ready, the bar examiners generally mail them to all applicants and posts them on its web site.
Scoring/Grading
A passing score on the New Mexico bar exam is 260 on a 400-point scale. The Multistate Bar Exam (“MBE”) is weighted 50%. The written questions are weighted 50%: 20% for the Multistate Performance Test (“MPT”) and 30% for the Multistate Essay Exam (“MEE”).
Pass Rate/Stats
Traditionally, the New Mexico bar exam pass rates can range from 81% to 85% for all of the takers, 88% to 95% for the first-time takers, and 25% to 57% for the repeat takers.
